St. Patricks Day

Why is this Blue Car Really Green?

It’s St. Patrick’s Day and what Green item are we looking for at the end of the rainbow?  Why of course, it’s a shiny new leaf.  No.  Not a clover leaf, but a Nissan Leaf.  Two years ago we installed a 7.1 kilowatt photovoltaic solar panel system on our roof here in Lake Forest so we could look forward to receiving one of the first all electric cars and power it from the sun.   Well, the boat from Japan unloaded our new car right before the tsunami.  As we speak, we are waiting for the call from the dealer to tell us that we can come pick up our St. Patrick’s Day Green Vehicle.  Actually, the color is white, but we will sure be saving a lot of Green on it when we plug it into our solar powered house instead of a pump at the gas station!

LAKE FOREST: Don’t Depend on Dumb Luck this St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day has become a popular night out to celebrate with friends and family. Unfortunately, due to the large number of drunk drivers, this fun night out has also become very dangerous.

In 2009, there were 103 crash fatalities on St. Patrick’s Day in the United States, according to statistics by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Thirty-seven percent (37%) of those drivers had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 or above.

Lake Forest Police Services recommends these easy steps for a safe St. Patrick’s Day:

  • Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin.
  • Before drinking any alcohol, designate a sober driver and leave your car keys at home.
  • If you are impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member or use a Sober Rides program.
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, don’t hesitate to contact your local law enforcement agency – Orange County Sheriff’s Department Dispatch (949)770-6011.
  • And remember, if you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

Driving impaired is simply not worth the risk. Don’t depend on dumb luck this St. Patrick’s Day. Designate your sober driver before the party begins.
